12 RH-532 saved from basement

Berichtdoor Gottschalck » di sep 05, 2017 10:27 pm

Hi there, new in fora.
I'm from Denmark and would like to share a story.
Last night I was saving 12 pieces of RH-532 from a basement. It was a last minute call and the speakers was saved being destroyed.
The former owner who has died was a technician in Philips Copenhagen. All the speakers was connected together for an discotheque in this basement and haven't played for a decade.
I took all the speakers home (150 kilograms) and have used 4 ours today for testing and cleaning them. Some of the speakers have water damage and aren't wery nice. All speakers have been opened and started on a vario transformer. All speakers have been set to 240 volts mode and have been inspected for bad or damaged caps. I was lucky that 9 of 12 speakers now are working fine. The rest will be tested tomorrow. I was wondering about U guys and girls??? have anyone good recommendations about tips and tricks and renovations for those speakers.
I guess that some of the elektrolyt caps need to be replaced?
I will share pictures tomorrow.
Cheers
Jesper

That was a sacred act what you did there. :angelic-little:

You have to replace all electrolytic capacitors and some other parts maybe, depends...

After a major overhaul, adjustment will be necessary.

Welcome Jesper! :D
You can order sets with the required capacitors here: http://www.mfbfreaks.com/webshop/compon ... visiesets/ but you need to look at all your 532's to check the versions. The PL-number indicates the version.

Service manuals are to be found on this site as well: http://docs.mfbfreaks.com/sm/Service_Ma ... 532-II.pdf
and http://docs.mfbfreaks.com/sm/Service_Manual_22RH532.pdf

The man behind this site, forum and webshop is Thomas; I will draw his attention to this topic.

Greetings;

Ok thanks a lot.
The most of the PL number has disappeared so I guess I had to read the caps on the manual way. I can't upload picks. System says that they are to big. I would like to share some pictures with you.
Cheers Jesper

Hi Jesper,

Pics are limited in size when you want to load them directly. What you also can do is store them in the cloud and put the public links in the text. With the proper codes they will be displayed correctly.

Though there are some differences between the diverse PL's, most Caps are likely to be the same. But you'll find out checking their values.

The 12 speakers at home.
Only 6 are playing this afternoon because I went out for DIN cables.
The sound was ok, but I am not really impressed. The sound is a bit hash and boomy. The speakers probably might need new caps and adjusting. My tech arrives at Friday. I think I need to take some more pictures of the back to show the difference between some of the speakers. The oldest speakers I ovn have a nice metal power adjustable screw for 110/230 volt. Newer ones have a small red plastic screw who almost is stuck and hard to adjust. 4 of the 12 speakers have different drive units.

Nice picture and welcome.
The 2 on top have other mid's and tweeters as stock.
Also one has a woofer with a bigger rubber... Eeuh
(Sorry for the poor rusty English) its the oldest in the collection I think.
Restore en adjust one set and maybe you are supprisd by the sound.

Eeeeeuh das ook leuk maar waar zal ik nu eens aan beginnen?

I noticed that too. That doesn't have to be a problem. An AD5060Sq8 can be replaced by an AD5062Sq8, no problem; But an AD5061Sq8 is 3dB more efficient and has a Fc that is about an octave higher; That is a problem allright.
So Jesper, if you encounter units with a typenumber that differs from what's in the SM just let us know.

Yes, the oldest 532's have an AD8065MFB, the later one's have an AD8067MFB; The electronic adjustments are differend as well :!:
Correct tweeter: AD0160T8
Correct mid: AD5060Sq8
Both units have an efficiency of 90dB/W/m. The crossover circuit is dedicated to these units.

Ok will tjeck the woofers tomorrow.
Some more pictures.
This board will need new caps before startup. Funny looking caps with bumps. Can I replace the double 2350uf with a single 4700uf?
Cheers Jesper

Those bumbs are normal and yes you can use a 4700µF. The big one seems to be leaking, that's a normal picture as well, knowing the age of the parts...

With regard to historical production tolerances, a 6800uF cap is also an option (if you want, 10.000uF wouldn't scare the transformer either ;) ). Those older caps sometimes have considerably larger capacity than specified, while modern capacitors are produced to much tighter tolerances. So your old 4700uf easily could have measured 5500uF or more when new.

Especially if you use 6800u or greater, it won't hurt to replace the bridge rectifiers. 3 BY164 in parallel if I remember correctly. Not the ideal choice but probably the best price/performance at the time. You could use a single modern rectifier that can handle more than enough current to last forever with the larger capacitor.
